PSN User Had $600 in Fraudulent Withdrawals From Debit Card

PSN

The PlayStation Network has been down for a while now and reports had recently emerged that user’s credit card details were potentially at risk. Now, someone has had $600 in fraudulent withdrawals from their debit card this weekend that was linked to his PSN account.

A user on NeoGAF commented:

I had $600 dollars in fraudulent withdrawals this weekend out of the debit card that I had associated with my PSN account. I do not know if it was related, but just a heads up.

So, it seems there’s a massive possibility that PSN user’s credit card details are indeed at risk; judging by the person above who stated his account had $600 taken out without his permission.

Also, due to the fact that Sony doesn’t even know yet if PlayStation Network user’s credit and debit cards linked with their PSN account is in trouble or not, this may have happened to many PSN users who had their cards tied in with their accounts.

Do we have any idea if this user had that debit card on file for his Netflix or iTunes account, or something else like that? I suppose any time you keep your card details on file with a service provider, you may be at risk. I’m just saying that maybe his fraud can be traced to PSN, but maybe it could be traced to somewhere else. He could have used his debit card at an ATM that had a skimming device installed on it; any number of things could have happened that lead to the fraud.

sounds fake $600. Bank would have noticed straight away. Small payments (£5 more often less than that) to multiple accounts. Who notices when £5 or less goes.

Take this with a grain of salt. “A user on NeoGAF” isn’t a reliable source by any means. I could post on there now for instance claiming how I’ve lost thousands. Although possible, personal details are encrypted so using them for fraud isn’t as easy as simply stealing the data.

Most intelligent people know not to use a debit card for any online transactions. As a consumer, you have more protection from fraud with a credit card. I too smell fake as the PSN sends email alerts with each and every purchase, as a heads up.

There is a chance that the said user, could have had a friend or someone who take advantage of the fact that PSN is down, though just a thought. The fact that sony shut down the servers at the point of attack, I can’t imagine much could have happened.

why does neogaf whine about psn being down when they actually hate multiplayer games.. example: ea, uncarted mp-oriented announcements.. all users were like ‘nooo, wah, waaah, damn mp in gamez’

I as well this last week had Major action attempts against my credit card that was attached to my PSN account, amounts for 13,222 and 1700 dollars worth. Received a call from Visa stating that there was a Security Threat against my Visa. Makes me wonder considering that my Visa is only used for the PSN. Lesson learned, using a PSN card from now on.

Lol Neogaf…the thread devoted to the PS outages is cracking me up despite the fact that I went a wee bit overboard (something about monkeys, poop and productivity) and thus earned a ban.

He specifically said “Debit Card”, not “Credit Card”. That unauthorized withdrawal could have easily occurred in his own city by some in-store frauders.

I too have had my credit card info stolen, which is quite a shame as I had to cancel the card when I was expecting a payment of US$10,000,000.00 if anyone here is willing to share their CC details with me I will split the money.

I had $200 taken out my debit card as well. This occurred in Florida and I live in MN. Luckily my bank’s fraud dept caught it right away and I have since cancelled my card. This just sucks.

Just because a person might use a card to purchase things off PSN doesn’t mean that the recent attack will cause fraudulent activity on the card. Even if you were to use the card at a local restaurant you can get fraud. It might not even be the restaurant itself that has a breach, it can be the merchants processor, skimming (as previously mentioned) or online purchases. The best defense us to keep a good eye on your account. Your Financial Institution will have fraud detection but they can’t catch everything (especially if your card activity is pretty cavalier), but there is always a dispute process to get your money back, even if the financial institution has to cover it themselves. It’s still way safer than carrying cash or using checks. Either of which when you lose, you lose

I was hit with 2 charges on my debit card today from a German based website. I caught but I am powerless to stop the funds from clearing. The bank says it has to clear before a claim can be filed. How stupid is that. The website screams fraud when you see it as charging 2 big amounts on my account that I can’t even cover. Yet the bank’s fraud department never caught it and is going to send my account deep in the negative. This is the card used for psn. So yes it can and does happen.
