Splash Damage has spoken about the current PSN outage.

Gamespot UK’s podcast saw Paul Wedgwood talking about it. He said:

Brink is one of those games where it is best enjoyed when you get to play the online experience as well…Of course for us it is frustrating to feel that half of our potential userbase won’t be able to play online together immediately. I guess it could have some impact on sales, but really what we’re saying to people at the moment is, you could be one of the first level 20 characters when PSN comes back online.

You can certainly understand why people have been so frustrated, and it’s because Sony have been providing such a great service, so you care about the fact that it’s gone now. So in some ways, it is actually really a compliment to Sony. I know that a lot of people are venting their frustration at Sony and are quite angry about the situation, but you have to think that there are a lot of people there who have just had a horrific few weeks, because of a bunch of hackers. These are individuals at Sony that are going through really really stressful periods, and it’s very hard to protect your network against every possible threat. There’s always going to be something new and unexpected, and I’m an ex-server network analyst, so I suppose I’m probably more empathetic than your average person.

Naughty Dog’s Amy Hennig has commented that Uncharted cannot be produced on a shoestring budget, and the Sony allows them to have a great amount of freedom.

In the latest issue of Edge magazine, Amy Hennig, Creative Director at Naughty Dog, has commented on why she believes the Uncharted franchise is different to other games. Regarding the amount of polish seen in the story of the games she said:

One [factor] is that Sony gives us the time and the money to do it, and takes it seriously.

When asked if she would be able to achieve the same results if she left Naughty Dog she said:

If somebody were to hire me and ask me to replicate what Naughty Dog achieved, I’d have to say, ‘Ok, but you have to realize that there’s a certain amount of expense that goes along with this.”

Amy continued:

Sony supports Naughty Dog wholeheartedly, both financially and creatively. You can’t do it on a shoestring, unfortunately. We’re learning to do certain things for less than maybe we did originally, but as I said, it takes time with the actors and you have to pay them for their time.

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception releases on November 1st, 2011.

The PlayStation Network has been offline for several weeks now and Sony have been reiterating that they’re trying their level best to get the PSN back online. Sony stated recently via a blog update that a PlayStation 3 firmware update will be released upon the PlayStation Network’s revival, and now it seems that one PS3 user has already got the firmware update notification whilst PSN is down.

A user on GAF posted the following images showing he received the firmware update notification whilst the PSN is down today (click on image to enlarge):

The PS3 owner, DailyVacation, was asked to verify his current PlayStation 3 firmware version and he replied:

Still at 3.60. If you select yes, you get the message stating you already have the latest firmware. So it seems they’re activating it for certain locations? I’m gonna put up screenshot in a bit.

Could Sony be starting to finally bring back the PlayStation Network?

When Sony’s E3 press conference last year commenced no one had thought Valve co-founder Gabe Newell would come out and announce Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3; a shock for many after the acclaimed developer criticizing Sony’s black behemoth machine. Now, it seems that Gabe wasn’t the person who made the initial decision to start developing for the PS3.

In the latest issue of Develop magazine (click here for digital issue here) it shows the gaming outlet interviewed the Valve team and it revealed some interesting information regarding the decision to start developing for the PlayStation 3.

Click on the image below to enlarge to see the message:

Valve’s Erik Johnson said:

No one here decided to do anything about PS3 development, and the way we vote to do something about it is to simply start working on it.

He later continued:

That’s why we’re working on the PS3 now, because we had about four engineers – some of which have worked here for a few years –who were annoyed that we hadn’t developed for that platform, and they were willing to cross over.

Valve’s latest title, Portal 2, is now in stores for multiple platforms including the PS3.

Splash Damage boss Paul Wedgwood said:

The PlayStation 3, for us, was just alien technology. Take the cover off and its probably organic. We decided from the beginning we’d get the PC up and running as quickly as possible for gameplay testing. Within about three months of starting we were playing multiplayer games, just deathmatch with the initial weapon loadout. Then we started playing with the basic first couple of objectives. Then as SMART came in, we started playing with the basic vaulting, mantling, sliding under things and leaning around corners.

Some new juicy Mass Effect 3 details have been unearthed including one huge spoiler in the highly anticipated BioWare-developed game.

The Official Xbox Magazine contained the following new details for Mass Effect 3 including a huge spoiler so beware:

You can jump and roll, and blindfire has been introduced.

As well as gaining civilisation’s alliegance, you can lose them to the Reapers if you don’t play right, similarly to losing squadmates in the suicide mission.

Your weapons have three upgrade slots -scope barrel and grip, and you can change the colour and camoflage of weapons.

Cerberus and husks will be main enemies, and cerberus is divided into three main types of troops – heavy bruisers, medium and light.

You may be able to get an eyepiece, like Garrus’s, that will allow non-sniper weapons to scope in further, which also hints at armour having more of an effect on gameplay.

Bioware are going to announce something big at E3 – a lot of the gameplay features and more squadmates.

Spoiler:

The magazine suggests that Garrus is being built up to a dramatic death.

Thanks, GAF.

Unfortunately for PlayStation 3 owners, Google’s Chrome browser will not be coming to Sony’s console.

As noted by a GAF commentator, he gathered evidence that Sony’s recent job listing did not confirm Chrome’s existence for the PS3.

Thanks for posting but it’s just the same quote from a Netherlands blog that quoted androvsky in this thread before he discovered ChromeClientPOSIX was referring to the browser chrome not “Google Chrome” the web browser. They republished it (without checking for accuracy) when Sony used “Monster” job search for the Webkit software engineer.

If we were not checking for ourselves we would believe, as others who do not bother to read this thread, that Chrome is coming to the PS3.

Definition of: browser chrome

The borders of a Web browser window, which include the window frames, menus, toolbars and scroll bars. When designing a Web page, the browser chrome must be added to determine the width of the page.

We know from looking at the Sony published difference files that it’s a GTK+Webkit which will be a better fit for the PS3. It will support WebGL, SVG and HTML5 and be hardware accelerated. Rendering will be with Cairo with OpenGL (or custom with PSGL) using the Cell SPUs and fast enough for web games which a recently published 2009 Sony Patent seems to imply are a part of Sony’s plans for this webkit WebGL browser.

The proof that it’s a GTK+ webkit is cited here in the first Sony webkit disclosure: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost…&postcount=269
Sony patent webGL games http://www.freepatentsonline.com/20110086706.pdf

The first disclosure for the HTML5 javascript engine (Nov 2010) could not be used as more than a rumor that webkit was coming to the PS3 as Sony could have stopped with just the engine to support IPTV. With the second webkit disclosure (Feb 2011) they have the renderer and chrome which supports a full webkit browser coming, it is no longer a rumor. Add to that the Sony published patent for WebGL games and all that is left is confirmation from Sony.
